Simplicity has become something of a rarity in slots, where sprawling reel grids, intricate bonus systems and an ever-growing list of mechanics, separate titles on an iGaming platform.
Innovation is a key cog in slot development, but classic formats remain vital for the online casino landscape, attracting players who value familiarity just as much as novelty.
The challenge is no longer simply recreating those traditional experiences, but finding ways to modernise them without losing their original popular qualities.
On the latest episode of the Beyond the Reels podcast, Oliwia Owczarz, Account Manager at Wazdan, spoke in depth about how the studio approached that challenge with its latest release, Mighty Crown: Empire of Gold, the second title in the Mighty Crown series to launch in 2026.
Wazdan embraced the classic three-reel format in favour of increasingly complex mechanics, providing appeal to modern players through the combination of a familiar layout with contemporary gameplay, enhanced visuals and layered bonus features.
Backing simplicity
Three-reel slots have been part of casino gaming for decades, both online and on the casino floor. While the wider industry has largely shifted towards five-reel video slots packed with features, Wazdan believes there remains a significant audience that values straightforward gameplay.
“The reason is actually very simple,” Owczarz explained. “It just works. Players love what they already know and they’re used to that.”
For Wazdan, nostalgia serves as the starting point rather than the finished product. The studio’s objective is to preserve the accessibility of traditional slot gameplay while introducing the production values and feature depth players have come to expect in 2026.
“We love exploring how we can expand a classic format with additional features to create a fuller experience,” Ofash added.
The result is a title that feels immediately recognisable but offers more depth than players might expect from a three-reel game.
Onto the bonus round
One of the biggest shifts within slot development over recent years has been the growing emphasis on bonus features. Bonus Buy mechanics, Hold & Win rounds and free-spin modes have become central selling points for many releases.
The downside is that the base game can sometimes become little more than a vehicle for reaching the feature.
With Mighty Crown: Empire of Gold, Wazdan wanted the journey itself to remain engaging.
From the opening spin, the game is designed to create anticipation rather than rushing players towards its bonus mechanics. The visual presentation, pacing and overall atmosphere were all built around creating a sense of discovery.
Owczarz stated: “We prioritise clear features, but we also use anticipation to motivate the players.
“The visual style supports this concept. We want players to feel like they’re explorers, ultimately discovering exactly what they can expect from our game, which is outstanding gameplay.”
Bonus reimagined
While the base game establishes the experience, the game’s defining mechanic is the Empire Bonus.
Triggered by landing three bonus symbols, the feature represents Wazdan’s attempt to rethink what a bonus round can look like within a classic three-reel framework.
Instead of simply awarding free spins, the Empire Bonus introduces several interconnected stages designed to continually build anticipation.
Owczarz said: “We aim for a distinct experience in the bonus round. The challenge was designing a feature that perfectly complements the core gameplay and also delivering a completely separate layer of excitement.”
At the start of the feature, one symbol is randomly selected to become the only symbol capable of landing during the round. As additional symbols appear, they transform into multiplying wilds within a Hold & Respin mechanic, with the respin counter resetting whenever another symbol lands.
Should players manage to fill the entire grid, the feature reaches its climax as every wild contributes towards a significantly larger payout through stacked multipliers.
Balancing volatility
For any slot developer, balancing volatility remains one of the most important aspects of game design.
Large multipliers create excitement and headline win potential, but if players experience long periods without meaningful interaction, engagement inevitably suffers.
Wazdan sought to avoid that by ensuring every stage of the Empire Bonus contributes towards the overall experience.
Within the feature, wild symbols can carry multipliers of up to 5x, combining to create a maximum multiplier of 15x across winning combinations.
However, according to Owczarz, the structure of the feature is what ultimately keeps players engaged.
She noted: “Breaking the bonus down into multiple stages is exactly what keeps the rounds engaging. It ensures the feature never feels flat or boring, which naturally encourages players to try again and also keeps the overall gameplay loop highly dynamic.”
Rather than presenting players with a single all-or-nothing outcome, the mechanic provides multiple moments of anticipation throughout the feature, creating a more satisfying experience regardless of the final result.
Refining gameplay
Mighty Crown: Empire of Gold reflects a wider philosophy that continues to shape Wazdan’s content strategy.
Instead of chasing every emerging mechanic, the supplier has focused on refining proven gameplay concepts through stronger presentation, smarter mathematics and carefully considered feature design.
As the studio continues expanding its 2026 roadmap while preparing new releases and longer-term plans for 2027, that balance between familiarity and innovation is likely to remain central to its development strategy.
