Slot development is moving away from passive spinning as studios introduce mechanics designed to make gameplay more interactive.
Across the iGaming sector, developers are increasingly blending slot structures with video game-style systems such as progression mechanics, visible bonuses and interactive features.
The trend was discussed on a recent episode of Beyond the Reels where Valentyna Rednikina, Senior Account Manager at ELA Games joined SBC’s Media Manager James Ross to explain how the studio’s latest releases aim to combine traditional slot formats with more engaging gameplay mechanics.
Rednikina argued that player expectations are shifting as studios look to increase engagement within increasingly competitive game lobbies.
She noted: “I think that the blurring of the lines between active video gaming and traditional slots will be what we will see in the next few years. The days of purely passive spinning are coming to an end.”
ELA Games recently launched four titles built around this philosophy.
Tea Party of Fortune
Tea Party of Fortune modifies the Hold-and-Win mechanic using coloured tea coins that can trigger different bonus functions, including multipliers and respins.
The game also introduces a visual progression system, the Overflowing Teacup Progression, where a teacup fills as players move closer to a bonus round, along with the Curious Growth feature that expands the reels to a 5×5 grid.
On the Overflowing Teacup Progression, Rednikina expressed that this feature “completely changes” the player’s psychology while playing the game.
She added: “It completely changes the psychology of the session because we use the name of visible progression. This teacup allows players to physically see how they are moving through the bonus round with every single spin”.
Wealth of the East
Wealth of the East introduces a tabletop-style mechanic through a “God Fu” Wild that activates a 20-sided dice. When triggered, the dice multiplies visible coin values and can award jackpot prizes.
Speaking about the God Fu feature, Rednikina stressed the need to include components that appeased instant gratification and cross-genre appeal to players.
She explained: “God Fu acts as our Wild. His appearance awakens the 20-sided dice on the screen and then it instantly boosts the coins in view with multipliers, rewards and instant jackpots. This transforms coin collection from just a waiting game to an instant gratification event.
“It brings an almost physical tabletop gaming feel, because players love rolling dice. So by blending this physical tabletop element with our digital gameplay, we added a completely original layer of excitement that combines classic slots with modern gaming.”
Rapid Wilds
Meanwhile, Rapid Wild focuses on frequent wins and momentum-based gameplay. The title builds towards bonus rounds that include sticky wilds, expanding symbols and multiplier combinations.
On the title’s core identity, Rednikina expressed that the slot title was a “love letter” to classic slots of yester-year.
“Rapid Wild is our kind of love letter to the classic slots,” she stated. “We wanted to give players this electric neon environment where actually the entire point is that the game feels hyperactive.
“During the base game you are hunting the crazy hearts to scale the jackpot. Then when the bonus triggers, all these mechanics double and triple Wilds, Sticky Wilds, they unleash it at once. It creates this supercharged environment.”
Patrick’s Treasure Pots
Finally, Patrick’s Treasure Pots, which releases this week, uses a traditional 5×3 layout with 20 paylines but adds modern progression mechanics such as magic pots and coin bonuses. The familiar structure was designed to attract players while allowing new mechanics to be introduced gradually.
Addressing the perception that seasonal slots might have a strict “time limit”, Rednikina detailed how the game’s lifespan actually varies significantly by market and operator strategy.
She explained: “We expect it to be a fantastic addition to any operator’s lobby. But yeah, it depends of course on the market. It depends on the operator case by case.
“For some operators, we see already from their lobbies that these thematic slots, especially St Patrick slots, generally always stay in top positions.
“For some of them, it’s just a seasonal container category in the main lobby… I feel like for some markets it’s a matter of one month per year.”
Ross and Rednikina concluded that interactive features will play a larger role in slot design as studios compete to keep players engaged for longer sessions.
