Stake has not been deterred by a gambling tax increase and possible gambling reform in Mexico, launching its offerings in the iGaming market.
The operator enters the country as it seeks to improve its fight against the illegal market by modernising the Federal Law of Games and Lotteries of 1947, regulating online casinos, improving player protection, encouraging investment and combating criminal activities.
A gambling reform bill is expected to be presented soon, but the Morena government has already acted, increasing the gaming revenue tax from 30% to 50% and adding gambling to the Special Tax on Production and Services (IPES).
However, Stake is launching in Mexico and will operate under a permit-based structure regulated by SEGOB (Ministry of Interior), acting as an agent under Uno Capali’s licence agreement.
The Mexico licence sees the operator continue its Latin America expansion, where it is also present in Colombia and Peru. The launch also comes ahead of the FIFA World Cup, which Mexico will co-host alongside the US and Canada.
Jarrod Febbraio, Stake Director, commented: “Mexico is an important and exciting market for us – one that combines strong underlying growth with a deep cultural connection to sport, which aligns perfectly with what Stake is built for.
“We’ve built significant momentum across Latin America in recent years, including in markets such as Peru and Colombia and Mexico represents a natural next step given its scale and long-term potential.
“With Mexico set to co-host the 2026 football World Cup tournament, the timing of this launch reflects our ability to move with precision into high-value markets at the right moment. It gives us the opportunity to establish a strong presence ahead of one of the biggest sporting events in the world and deliver a world-class experience for Mexican players.”
