Sun International appoints industry veteran Ulrik Bengtsson as Group Chief Executive

Sun International has confirmed the appointment of Ulrik Bengtsson as its new Group Chief Executive (CE).

Citing his extensive “experience and proven track record”, Bengtsson will be tasked with succeeding current CE Anthony Leeming and continuing the Johannesburg-based firm’s “significant transformation”.

Originally focused on retail, Sun International has diversified its offering to include online gaming and sports betting through its Sun Bet and Sun Slots brands.

On his new role, Bengtsson commented: “Sun International is an iconic leisure group with a proud heritage, and a unique growth opportunity to become a leading omnichannel player in the rapidly evolving global gaming landscape.

“I am thrilled to bring my experience and expertise to this fantastic organisation as Chief Executive and look forward to working with the board and other stakeholders to drive its continued success and chart a bold path forward into the future.”

Throughout his 20 years in the gaming and broadcasting industry, Bengtsson has held C-level roles at Virgin Media, Betsson Group and William Hill

During his time at the latter, he helped William Hill navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the start of the UK Gambling Act review and ultimately the firm’s sales to Caesars Entertainment and 888 Holdings

Sam Sithole, Sun International Chair, said “Ulrik is a highly experienced and accomplished global executive with deep industry knowledge and expertise.

“His proven track record of delivering results and unlocking value in complex, dynamic environments positions him extremely well to lead Sun International into its next phase of growth. The board extends a warm welcome to Ulrik as Chief Executive.”

Sithole also hailed the “indelible mark” Leeming has left on Sun International and thanked him for his “exemplary stewardship” since he assumed the role of CE in 2017.

Leeming previously announced his intentions to take early retirement at the end of 2025 and he will step down from his role on 1 July before leaving the company on 31 December.

Bengtsson is set to take the reigns of Sun International on 1 July, however, this could happen earlier depending on when he receives his work permit.
